Australians rarely notice, but during the month of July a delightful scent of eucalyptus permeates the air. After thirty years in this wonderful country it's sad to relate that my sense of smell has, like every aspect of my life, become Australianised, but I remember nostalgically the first breath of hot, perfumed air as I stepped onto the tarmac at Melbourne Airport. Coming from Scotland, the land of rain, clouds, sleet and snow, I didn't think to bring sunglasses and the intense light of the Australian sunshine spoke of a land completely alien to that I was used to.
